Updates for the Week of February 2-6

Dave Frankel will be substituting for Amy Posner on the following Fridays: 1/30 and 2/6.

All of Eithne McGowan’s art classes are cancelled for the rest of January.

Financial Advice and Lessons with Janet Doherty will to continue to meet every Wednesday at 10:30am-12pm in the Adult Lounge.

Monday’s Israeli Folk Dancing will be for intermediate level dancers. Class will take remain in the Media Room 11:30am – 12:30pm.

Friday’s Chair Yoga will now take place at 1:30pm – 2:30pm as corrected on the Sports & Wellness schedule.

The last class of Music Rudiments with Elona Migirov for this session is scheduled to take place on 2/9.

Conversational Spanish with Isaias Mercado will begin on 2/23 and it will occur every Monday until 3/30 (11am-12pm President’s Room).

Shakespeare as Historian will take place on 2/3 and 2/17 during the month of February (9:30-10:30am Adult Lounge).

World History with John Rossi will begin on 2/11 and it will occur every Wednesday until 3/11 (1-2pm President’s Room).

Monday February 2: Let’s Talk about: FINANCIAL SECURITYAdult Lounge 1:30-2:30pm

Learn about the benefits of banking with direct deposit and the rewards that can be received.  Are you concerned  with outliving your money, leaving a legacy, and safety?  Join financial specialists from Santander in order to learn the answers to your questions! 

There will be raffles, prizes and time for Q&A!

Thursday February 5: Cinema Club &  Lunch. 12:00-3:00pm “Jobs.” 2013,122 min

Ashton Kutcher delivers a tour de force performance as Apple founder Steve Jobs in this biopic that spans three decades of the entrepreneur's life. The story follows Jobs from the obscurity of a Palo Alto garage to global fame as a technology icon.

 

 

Thursday Dinner/Entertainment: Maria Roldan. Music of love and passion will more your heart and your feet!5pm-7pm in the Social Hall. $5 fee for entertainment, $3 recommended contribution for dinner.

Thursday February 19: 12pm. Israel Briefin - The Druze Community in Israel.

We will have as main speaker Koftan Halabi, Founder and Executive Director of the Druze Veterans Association. He has served as a Senior Advisor to Israeli Ministers and Members of Knesset.

He will discuss the ways they are making entryways into Israeli society for young Druze veterans. They are creating relationships with major corporations to help their youth study in universities and obtain the leaderships skills that are necessary to compete in the employment market. Employment and financial stability are often blocked due to low levels of education and the lack of employers willing to employ Druze individuals. This will be an open discussion to hear directly about their community and the challenges that they face.  

Movie to follow: The Syrian Bride. 2004, 97min

Mona, a Druze bride-to-be, lives in a village on the border of Israel and Syria. Her father, a political leader, wants her to marry a Syrian comedian, but her move to Syria would likely be a permanent one, considering the political unrest between the two countries. The wedding planning is a nightmare, and tensions are high -- especially when Mona's siblings, who have moved on to new countries and complicated relationships, come home before the big day.

Weekly Updates:

Shakespeare as Historian will take place again on January 27 at 9:30-10:30am in the Adult Lounge.

Canasta Instructions for Beginners will resume on January 28.

Crochet Class will be cancelled on January 29.

Discover Your Apple iPad will resume on January 30.

Sociology with Irene Dabrowski continue to meet every Friday (4-5pm in the Arts & Crafts Room)  until January 30.

Everyday Computing classes (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) are cancelled until further notice. All registered participants will be notified when class is scheduled to begin.

Wednesday January 28: Trip to The Museum of Modern Art. The bus is leaving from 
the Henry Kaufman Campground at 10am.


Thursday January 29: Cinema Club &  Lunch. 12:00-3:00pm

“IDA”. 1 hour 22 minutes. In 1962, Anna is about to take vows as a nun when she learns from her only relative that she is Jewish. Both women embark on a journey to discover their family story and where they belong.
