It dramatically shortened the distance between the east and west coasts of North America. Construction of the canal began in 1881by France, but there were engineering problems and too many people were dying due to disease. Construction stopped until the US took over in 1904. Very few human endeavors have ever been able to achieve changing the face of the planet on which we live as did the successful completion of the inter-oceanic Panama Canal in 1914 by the United States. The Panama Canal expansion project doubled the capacity of the Canal and created a new lane allowing more and larger ships to transit. 10/13/21 - Alaska: Gold: Gold: Gold: In 1898, one of the largest events to affect Alaska’s future was the discovery of Gold. The story of the Alaska gold rush has much in common with the California gold rush of 1849. In the summer of 1897, two steamboats arrived in San Francisco and Seattle, disembarking prospectors carrying extraordinarily heavy luggage filled with nuggets of gold in fruit jars and jelly tumblers. The news flashed across the country, and tens of thousands of people, most of them young men, began preparing to head north to Alaska. 10/20/21 - The Amazing Amazon - Magical, Vibrant and Passionate: The Spanish soldier, Francisco de Orellana, gave the river its name after reporting pitched battles with tribes of female warriors, whom he likened to the Amazons of Greek mythology. The Amazon rainforests are the largest ecosystem of the world and are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. 11/03/21 - Polynesian Island – The Land That Time Forgot: On Easter Sunday Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen discovered a Polynesian Island 1400 miles from the coast of South America and named it Easter Island. He noted that the island was treeless and wondered how its massive statues were erected. Much of the population was later wiped out and the island became a possession of Chile. 11/10/21 - Captivating Cuba – Yesterday-Today and Tomorrow: The Rise of Fidel Castro had a profound effect on Cuban society, leading to doubts about the ability of the Cubans to govern themselves. After seizing power in the Caribbean Island nation of Cuba in 1959, leftist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro (1926-2016) aligned himself with the Soviet Union. Under Castro, Cuba grew dependent on the Soviets for military and economic aid. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores.
