How to listen and Understand Great Music: This class will focus on listening to and discussing the great masterpieces by the major composers of Western music: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, to name just a few. We will survey the historical eras - Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern. We’ll look at the composers lives and their position in society, as well as examining their different genres and forms, the development of the instruments and harmonic language, performance practice of the time, etc. This class will enhance your appreciation of classical music.
